| Toenail
disorders are very common. Toenail disorders include ingrown,
thickened, fungus or mycotic, injured, and deformed toenails.
Ingrown nails are characterized by the edge of the nail growing
into the fleshy border of the toe causing soreness, redness,
and often infection. Ingrown nails can be treated permanently
to prevent their recurrence. Thickened nails have several
causes including diabetes, circulatory disease, arthritis,
fungus, heredity, and infection. Treatment may require removal
of nail and destruction of the nail root. Fungus nails are
commonly seen in elderly people. If left untreated , fungus
nails worsen and may require permanent removal. Deformed toenails
may be associatied with a bone spur at the tip of the toe
pushing up beneath the toenail bed. These
nails may become painful and require surgical removal of the
bone spur.
